Music contemplation – part 2: good musicians

If you wish, check the first part here (in English) or here (in Bahasa Indonesia)

Well. Where were we? Oh. The talk about how good musicians are usually humble, open-minded, and happy. Right? Let’s carry on.

Good musicians and soon-to-be-good-musicians *nunjuk diri sendiri. Hopefully :p* are usually humble because they really learn. When you really learn –especially when involving kecambah-kecambah called not balok, at least in my case- you’ll know that the lesson was not always easy. Some people may quited the lesson thinking that it was not worth the pain. Some continued and grew to certain level and stop with kinda-similar reason or –the other common reason- because they’ve grown up and they have to work and it’s no longer the time to do some music play. Some others continued over again and grew even bigger and stronger day by day.
The more they learn, the more they realize that they’re just a super small bit in a vast music universe, and so, they get even more humble. There were also other professions needed to make the music come true: sound engineer, event organizer, manager, official, music agent, advertising staff, producer, music instrument company, and maybe even ENT doctor specialized in phonology. Those are people that may/must be faced by musicians to get their music into public recognition. And guess, what school did those people go into? Yep, right: ‘public’ school, not music school. This is exactly the reason why in earlier i mentioned that i was grateful for getting into public school instead of music school: because i could be having higher probability of being exposed to those people. Well i can’t really judge how a person who went to music school would act when facing this situation, but i assume, it’ll be a little hard to recognize that there’s a different ‘outside’ world that may be important to you when many that surrounds you are people who are just like you. Well. There are pluses and minuses for each of these two states, i guess. We’ll get there later :p

Good musicians are also open minded because they always strive for higher perfection from time to time. When you’ve achieved a perfection in one stage, in order to keep the music going, you cannot stop. You must aim some higher standard(s) that force you to work harder. When you’re aiming for the higher, you need to get out of your old shell and get your mind opened to possibilities. If you’re too afraid to let yourself exposed to possibilities, you may get back into your shell and stuck there ‘till the end of your time. If you strictly maintain your within-shell attitude when you’ve gone outside, you may not be able to adapt to outside ‘weather’ and die prematurely. So sad.
Good musicians are usually happy. Why? Because music is something really beautiful and its beauty makes people happy, especially for those who know. Many times depression is caused by the feeling of loneliness/being alienated/don’t belong. When you’re so within the grace of music, somehow you hardly realize that you could actually be alone/alienated/don’t belong, because music serves as great companion. Music gives you good ways to express your innermost feelings and lets you become yourself with rarely any condition. Music lets you to be the truest that you can be and that makes you highly likely to be depression-free :D
