November 19th, 2013

I didn’t realize how much i miss singing until i finally went to Jogja for my brother’s graduation ceremony in which we (me and my brother) practiced and sang “Somebody to Love” together with my favorite choir on earth, PSM U**. Oh. Quick info, btw:
this choir is on its way to a competition in Bangkok, and kinda short of money. So seriously, if somehow you (dear readers; alumni of the choir/university or not) happen to have extra, and wish to take part to help this choir carrying Indonesia's pride in an international event, DO ASK ME how. Thanks :)

Well. Anyway. I also could not believe that after all that I’ve been through, all these times that have passed, I could still feel ‘home’ when I came to gelanggang mahasiswa U** and interacted with all those choral things PSM U** dealt with. It’s nearly ten years now since the very first time i joined this choir, and now I barely know anybody there; still, I didn’t feel lost when I was there. Pretty surprising, actually, considering the fact that I still sometimes feel don’t-belong in other places i should’ve been familiar with.

It was just.. funny, maybe. At those times when I was kind of an anak-gahol-choir-jogja, many singing-related things were significant issues: people who pitched, had breathy voice, big boobs but small voice, unidentified chords, alternating 3/4 to 4/4 beat, full-gestured conducting.. well they are still significant issues for me, it’s just that I no longer seem to have adequate time and companions to talk to. Kinda sad, actually, considering how those activities turned out to be both very stimulating and very fulfilling. They kept me happy and energetic, and together they formed a great survival kit to get me through even the worst heartbreak. Life was just really colorful back then, when singing is not merely “bagus” or “nggak bagus”; it’s so much more than that for when it’s indeed just that, there’s just no way that I’ll keep doing it all these years without feeling bored..

I didn’t grieve about losing it, though. Instead, I felt happy and somehow relieved to find that music is undeniably there inside me. Whether it’s a lot or just a little, a promising career or merely a hobby, it’s there; and whatever I do or whatever I may become, it’s still there: ready to come out every time I reach out for it. I mean, it was like years ago since the last time I got involved in choir, or maybe pop-singing; and I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to do it again, but there I was: doing it like my previous performance was just yesterday. Somehow I even managed to incorporate the on-stage attitude into daily living, which is probably the reason why I don’t get much jitter when doing presentation, nor having objection to rehearse things to improve my performance. It also felt kinda amazing actually to learn that these days, I have somehow survived with minimum level of music. This may mean that I have grown stronger. Maybe I have even developed other survival kit(s) yet to be defined, and I’m quite excited to explore it further.

So.

It was a great time. Good music, good companion, good crowd, good event.. November 19th 2013 is surely a date to remember. And oh, happy graduation, adek paling ganteng sedunia. Have a blast! :D

there isn’t such thing as “a small job” :p

I don’t think i often mouth it out loud a lot, but to some extent, i kinda believe that there isn’t such thing as “a small job”. Of course there’re ups and downs in any belief, including this one. Let’s have a look at the down side first. This belief could probably be the very reason why i seem to be continously in some sort of trouble about making priorities. Haha. From the time i can’t really remember when, i guess I’ve always been a busy person. Either it’s seriously busy or I make myself busy, there’s hardly a time in my life when I can do nothing for a long while, and nothing happens. I enjoy having my life going that way. Even though I surely need to further improve my priority-making ability, i guess i’ve been getting better from time to time, and i manage kinda well. Not entirely well, but.. my works are pretty much done, I’m still having an average of 6-7 hours for sleeping each day, I’m generally happy.. so let’s just say it as “kinda well”.

One thing I do to stay busy: admiring the sea, and... pose :D

Anyway, it’s not the down side of that belief that i want to focus on, it’s the up side instead. Maybe the reason I still hold that belief after that lots of troubles it cost me is the fact that those troubles are in fact have much less significance than the benefits. So what are the benefits? Let’s have a look..

Some people may get more nervous when dealing with the so called “big job”, in which the nervousness predispose them to ruining it. Well, I don’t. I treat small and big jobs with similar tense, so I don’t actually distinguish the tense between the two. There was this conducting job I did when I was in my internship days. It was an opening of a seminar or such, and I was requested to conduct the audience to sing the national anthem “Indonesia Raya”. For me, it was nothing more than another ceremonies –17an, Hari Pendidikan Nasional, Hari Pahlawan, Sumpah Pemuda, Hari Kebangkitan Nasional.. all those national days, you name it – my university choir sang at those days every year. I was also a bit oh-please-deh-biasa-aja-kale when many people seemed to be anxious about the extra security sistem that was placed in the entrance of the seminar room; i felt it was just like the system in the airport, and when we do nothing wrong, then there should be no reason to get anxious, right? And so I did my job, just like what I did on other ceremonies. Only when my professor –who happened to be at that seminar as well– approached me and said, “Wah. Hebat kamu, ndirijen di depan Pak Wakil Presiden. Gimana tadi rasanya? Gugup nggak?”; and also when some friends who joined the seminar excitedly told me, “huwaaa Inke tampil di depan Pak Wakil Presideeeen >.< mupeeeng”... I kinda thought that...  “Oh right. That is Vice President.” It’s not that I didn’t know that the vice president would be there, but... my job there was doing the conducting. I would’ve conducted the same way either the VP is there or not, so.. i guess my indifference had saved me from unnecessary anxiety. That’s benefit number one.

Another example was those jobs we (my university choir) had as backing vocals for pop artists. It was usually that so called “big job” with the best pay, and a favorite to many members of the choir. Well. I hate those jobs. Haha. I have at least three reasons for feeling that way: 1) the song rarely gave any challenge when studying it, nothing to really learn about the song; 2) i consider the preparation –make up, dress, and the seemingly endless waiting time– as too complicated for such short performance, and when the preparation was complicated already, nobody then really gave a f about the singing; 3) those singers rarely had better voices than we were! He/she should’ve been the backing vocals, and one of us should take the lead instead. Haha.  So. It was just another stage, that shape my musical experience as a whole, but there’s nothing to brag about.  I wasn’t too excited about the job, so I didn’t talk a lot about it. Other people, who might excitedly tell their friends or families, “eh aku habis nyanyi bareng artis X loooooh” yet got ‘suboptimal’ response, might feel disappointed. So at this point, i guess my indifference saved me from disappointment. That’s benefit number two.

The new translation project, wish me luck ;)
Benefit number three, the indifference allows me to continously appreciate even the most regular silly things, and when you appreciate, being grateful turns quite easy. When you’re easily grateful, you’re easily happy. I believe that small things are building blocks for something big; and that many times, small or big is just a matter of context. My translating activity, for example. First time I did it, I did it merely for money, and if i got lucky, maybe i could learn a little from what I have translated. I did it wholeheartedly, though, because after few articles, it turned out to be something interesting, something I enjoy doing regularly. I guess it’s only last year that I casually counted how many articles that I have translated, and turn out that it has reached 300 something in three years. Then I got my first book translation job. My parents who already had the same job, got excited for seeing their kid doing something they also do. I got excited too, because it kinda convinced me bahwa saya bukan anak pungut. Bwahahaha. Two weeks ago, I got my second book translation job, and I was damn excited. I’ve just started to do it, and I’m still quite excited :D

So. Those things i regularly did merely in the name of survival, has become a kinda decent career. It’s not a one-big-life-changing shot, it’s an accumulation of lots of small shots. There’s also this silly dream I always have: to be able to have proper salary aside of being a doctor and Pegawai Negeri Sipil (PNS)... with my view of possible careers at that time, that idea was quite impossible. Life, however, always finds its way to show that things aren’t always as they seem. What I think is big, may be a small thing for others. What I think is insignificant at this time, may turn out to be my-whole-world at other time. Again, it depends on the context, I rarely really know. So yes, I’ll  just appreciate whatever I have, and put aside the envy and/or jealousy of longing for those I don’t. At the end of the day, HE always knows best about everything. I don’t need to guess His plan, we don’t need to speculate.. that’ll be too tiring. I’ll just believe while keep working. Well. I guess :p

P.S: Pardon the blabber. I haven't written for quite a long time, it takes some time to regain some degree of writing efficiency :p

Music contemplation – part 4: competition = prestigious? Not always...

I know you're bored, but just in case you're still interested, you can:
>> read the previous parts in English here, here, here, and here
>> read the previous parts in Indonesian here, here, and here
and i do wish you a safe ride :D *fingers crossed*

I used to consider myself as somebody competitive. I don’t always have to win, but i do hate losing. Later on, however, i realized that the reason i competed was not for survival-for-existence, but more likely because i like the lessons competition gives.

Only when i was already in university that i fully realized that competition took sooooo much effort. Time, energy, mind, body, money .. those were all spent for competitions. In my case which involved university choir, often times competition is considered more prestigious as compared to concerts or regular ceremonial duties. I can’t really tell why. I mean it’s CHOIR competition. If your choir wins, it’s the choir that get the name, not some individual people. The name of the members would somehow remain unknown, so i feel that it should do no difference with regular ceremonial duties and/or jobs *which means, we have to do them all full heartedly since they’re all our stage. And each additional stage lead closer to perfection, so, why not?*
it's the choir that matters, not you.

Well. That’s what i think. But of course the thought doesn’t happen to everybody, and i’m fully aware of that. When a ‘stranger’ did a sight-seeing to my CV and found that i have been into some competitions (and won- both with the choir or alone), many times they’d like give that sight of envy, thinking that i went around much for fun competitions, meeting many people, get much money from the winning, and that i must be somehow famous for have been in such many stages. Well. Those are not true, of course.

I lost social and studying hours for competition –an amount of loss that i can’t really call ‘little’. I don’t meet many people in competition since in the place of competition, we’ll be too busy practising and preparing that it’ll be kinda hard to go around and greet everybody. And whoever did the choir knows, rarely that the winning team get any money as a prize. And being famous just because you’ve been in many competitions? No, trust me, that doesn’t happen, unless you’re congenitally popular already.

When we look only at the outcome, moreover, the view could even be more disappointing. It could be the non satisfying medal/diploma achieved. it could be the unfair decision from judges (which somehow happened more often lately, don’t know why). It could also be the super pain-in-the-ass committe who acted like they’re the most good-looking president of the united states that made the non satisfying outcome became even more unbearable. Even when the competition has the word “international” in its title, when the competition was held in Indonesia, my experience somehow showed that it didn’t really feel like seriously international.
Well.
Let’s just say that i hadn’t seen enough (coz indeed i haven’t :p), but it’s just...not always worth the sacrifice. The money mind body and soul put out, the expectations from within and from outside parties related (that sometimes unrealistic, gotta say), the tense felt during such duration required for preparation.. if it’s not for the sake of music learning, i could be just broke down, cry out loud, and quit. But of course, i didn’t. It’s music, and it’s good, so why should i quit anyway? :p

However, as said, competition today is getting more weird –or maybe it’s been weird all along but i just didn’t realize it? I don’t know. But somehow there are more competitions available these days. With the developed technology for information distribution, and with more people wishing to change life by doing a winning in a competition –oh yes i’m talking about you, tv ads and tv shows. You keep assuring people to change change change and change like nothing good from the old times- it is now much easier for competition committee to gain participants. And these non standardized competition could be highly heartbreaking sometimes. Well. Few heartbreaks somehow should happen to make you stronger, but continous heartbreak ... that’s masochism. And that’s not healthy. Especially when you’re –like- fighting your own fight and then you’re beaten down by SMS of thousands who don’t actually know. One against thousands. No, that’s not fair. *yes i’m talking bout you, weep-selling talent show*

So.
Yes, I’m kinda pissed *hey, i’m having my period, getting easily pissed is part of it :p* And no, competitions just don’t excite me, even when it has the word “international” in its title. I’d rather be in concerts since they allow personal appreciation from each audience for the performer. Indie ‘concerts’ such as jazz mben senen is even more liberating since the appreciation somehow don’t involve much fame, great names, or the amount of cheque the performer receives. We only need to watch, enjoy, and appreciate the gift of music in whichever way we like. We could still discuss about the performance, nobody has to win the discussion, the discussion don’t always have to achieve certain conclusion...and that’s ok :D
Imagine if that happens in a competition, if judges’ can’t get the discussion to finally decide the winner, they could be hung up by all participants :p
One of the after-concerts. Good old time :)

And.
Here's a video from my most beloved choir on earth; a little bonus for you who have taken a look at this post. no, i'm not singing here. I'm watching, and enjoying. Hope you enjoy this video at least just as much as i do ;)

Well.
That’s all. For now. Or for good. Don’t know. Let’s just see... :p

Chili Con Carne –dan The Real Group

Song title: Chili Con Carne

Om-om dan tante-tante "The Real Group"

Well.

Bagaimanapun, kok rasanya tetap ‘nggak terlalu nge-soul’ getoh deh.

Benar-benar seperti mereka cuma sedang bersenandung sambil memasak bersama, lalu makan bersama, lalu makanannya enak, dan mereka saling bertukar komentar santai tentang makanannya.  Pokoknya kesannya lagu ini such a piece-of-cake, sampai sempat ada dugaan, “Ah. Haha.

The Real Group membawakan lagu “Chili Con Carne” dengan penguasaan not yang sangat rapi (ya iya lah, mereka yang bikin sendiri lagunya). Range penyanyi bass yang sampai rendah banget, nggak masalah. Penjiwaan lagu, dapet baaaangeeeett. Ini berbeda dengan Marion Raven dari M2M yang justru tersenyum menggoda saat menyanyikan lirik, “been lonely since the day, the day you went away.” Pokoknya, penghayatan lagu oke lah.

Begitu.

And so. I think that’s so cool.

Membosankan.

They’re just good. It’s just cool the way they seem to always invent and re-invent. Seems like by dwelling within music, you’ll never get bored at all. Such a busy-ly happy musical life.

Yah. Itulah ‘sedikit’ tentang The Real Group. Serius, ini sedikit. Baru sekitar 1500 KATA–berdasarkan word counter MS word.

Akhir kata,
Roses are red, violets are blue. Don't let yourself being a copycat, just be happy to be the true you.
*nggak ada hubungannya

NB: I seriously think that siapapun yang belajar vokal (penyanyi solo / vocal group / choir), HARUS tahu The Real Group. Highly recommended, rating: 1000 stars (kalau cuma lima bintang, nggak cukup).

Twenty something

It feels good to be a twenty something and unemployed. Haha.
Well, legally, i’m unemployed. As a fresh graduate from ‘that’ school, somehow i just have soooo much procedural things to be passed through before i can finally get to work later. It may take weeks and even months to get all those things done. Luckily, i seem to be the kind of person who never run out of ideas. I always have things going on in my mind, and many times they’re not just happening in mind, they’re taking place in real setting. Haha. I don’t feel like unemployed at all, but i'm kinda did things..
i did a concert with my fellow choir-mates ...

i made and sell hand-made accesories ...
i translate journals and books, and many other things.
There are even times when i didn’t seem to have time to lay down. Huff. Busy happy, though. I yielded lots of experience, fun, and lessons too; many of them i didn’t and i won’t get from the field my job should be in, and i feel like i’m so ready for many more :D

It feels good to be twenty something and single ;)
No relationship, no feeling(s) that are really serious .. i can take many things easily most of the time. I don’t need to focus my energy on certain ‘topic’ so that i can spread the energy more, and get more. Haha. I don’t wish it to be forever, of course, but still, it just good to feel that i can do things kinda impulsively without an obligation to tell anybody where am i and what actually am i doing. Haha

It feels good to be twenty something and ‘easily triggered’.
Somehow i can develop a kinda huge idea just by seeing something kinda small. Don’t know, maybe i’m having this 'manic' personality or what, but surprisingly, many of my ideas are realistic. And of course, it just feels great when those ideas really do happen, and yes, somehow they do. God’s been so good and i’m just soooo lucky to be this way, i guess.

It feels good to be twenty something and not bored. Haha.
I’m lucky, gotta say. Many of my friends in my age have entered the so-called working world with obligation this and that, rules this and that, and that’s kinda scary. Haha. Maybe i’ll be like that, too, someday soon, but i have more chance at the moment, to enjoy many seconds of my life  in excitement, interest, and  gratefulness, for i’ve been given what i’ve been given. These are all so ‘wow’. I feel good :D

Don’t know.
It just feels good to be twenty something, as me ;)

Wish you all an always joyful twenty something, and also ages after :D
making friends with ETs would be exciting, i guess :p
